Admission criteria ( PhD in Integration and Modulation of Signals in Biomedicine)

Access Requirements

Article 7 of Rector's Resolution 42/2012 of February 6, ordering the publication of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia, establishes the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

  1. According to the regulations governing access to any official doctorate programme (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January), candidates must be in possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree.
  2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    1. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme as per the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60 must be at master's degree level.
    2. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's degree programmes.
    3. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.
    4. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Applicant profile

This PhD programme is addressed to students with a sound background in biomedical science (graduates in medicine, pharmacy, biology, veterinary science, etc.). The applicant profile to be admitted in this programme must be a person who:

  • is highly motivated;
  • has relevant biomedical training;
  • is willing to develop an experimental doctoral thesis; and,
  • is able to work either autonomously and in teams within a research group. 
     

It is highly recommended that the PhD student has an adequate command of spoken and written English so as to handle specialised bibliography.

Admission Criteria

The access requirements and admissions criteria are established in the Regulations governing official doctorate studies in the University of Murcia (approved by Governing Council on 27 January 2012 and available at http://www.um.es/web/vic-estudios/contenido/normativa

Article 8.- Selection and admission criteria for a PhD programme.

  1. Notwithstanding the provisions of Article 7 of the Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January the selection and admission onto a PhD programme is subject to the following rules:
    1. The selection process for the PhD programme in Integration and Modulation of Signals in Biomedicine will be carried out by the Academic Committee of said programme. The criteria considered are as follows:
      • Assessment of academic curriculum.
      • Assessment of relevant merits related to the requested PhD programme.
      • Any other criterion or procedure previously stated that allows the Committee to verify the applicant’s suitability to follow said studies.
    2. The resolution of admission onto a doctoral programme will be issued by the rector, at the proposal of the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme and without prejudice to delegations of competencies or signature that can be made in favour of the centre deans or the directors of doctoral schools.
  2. Admission onto PhD programs may include the requirement for specific training complements. For the purposes of public prices and the granting of scholarships and study grants, those training complements shall be considered doctoral level training.
  3. The PhD programme admission lists will be published on the TOUM of the University of Murcia. Other means of publication may be established by resolution of the rector.
  4. The admissions procedure established in the regulations and admission and registration instructions at the University of Murcia that is approved for each academic year will be applicable.
  5. In the event of students with special educational needs derived from disability, the selection and admission systems and procedures must include adequate support and counselling services, which will evaluate the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies.

The selection process will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the PhD programme.

The specific criteria used to select students are:

Curriculum evaluation

  • Academic record obtained in a biomedical field (70%).

Assessment of relevant merits

  • Language courses and courses related to biomedical fields (5%).
  • Participation in research projects, scientific publications, and relevant communication in biomedical fields (5%).
  • To have obtained the master's degree in "Technology and Research in Biomedical Science" or another with similar contents (10%).
  • Analysis, attitude, and motivation skills to carry out their doctoral thesis. These skills will be assessed through a personal interview (10%).

Students with special educational needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
