This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Access Profile

The most suitable profile to access the Doctorate Programme in Mathematics at the University of Murcia is that of a graduate in Mathematics or Statistics who has completed a master's degree in Mathematics or Statistics. Specifically, the Master’s degree in Advanced  and Professional Mathematics from the University of Murcia (see https://www.um.es/web/matematicas/estudios) and any of the research profiles it offers is considered ideal, since it provides an introduction to some of our research groups’ main research lines.

Admission of students coming from our previous doctoral programmes who were unable to complete their doctoral thesis will also be considered a priority, trying, as far as possible, so that they are not negatively affected by the change in regulations.

Admission will be open to other profiles and, if considered appropriate, the necessary compensatory actions may be promoted according to each applicant profile. These actions will include both attending the training offered by the International School of Doctoral Studies, as well as attending some classes of the mentioned masters, conferences, stays, and any other training action that both the tutor and the Academic Commission deem necessary.

In short, the profiles can be classified as follows:

P1. Students who graduated in Mathematics and have taken the master’s degree in Advanced and Professional Mathematics.

P2. Students who graduated in Mathematics and have not taken the master’s degree in Advanced and Professional Mathematics.

P3. Students with other bachelor’s degrees who have taken the master’s degree in Advanced and Professional Mathematics.

P4. Students with other degrees who have not taken the master’s degree in Advanced and Professional Mathematics.

Admission Criteria

The admission regulations will consider the applicant’s academic background and will respect equal opportunities and merit evaluation. If considered appropriate, personal interviews or specific admission tests may be conducted.

The bachelor’s and master’s degrees presented to access the programme will be valued, taking into account that which is stated above in “Access Profile”. Priority may be given to students with the master’s degree in Advanced and Professional Mathematics from the University of Murcia or to students from our previous doctoral programmes. The scores obtained, the tutor's and supervisor’s recommendations and any additional and relevant merits will also be assessed.

The weightings of the criteria will be as follows:

  1. Bachelor’s degrees provided, and scores obtained: 40%.
  2. Master's degrees and scores obtained: 30%.
  3. Recommendations by our doctorate programme’s lecturers: 20%.
  4. Other merits (languages, extracurricular training, scholarships, prizes, familiarisation with research, etc.): 10%.

If considered appropriate, the Doctorate Academic Commission may modify, detail or extend these criteria taking into account the data provided by the Quality Assurance System (QMS). These changes will be reported on the programme website.

Throughout the admission process, students will be informed of the need to take specific training complements. These complements may also be proposed later on by the tutor, with the Academic Commission’s approval.

In the case of students with special educational needs resulting from disability, the selection and admission systems and procedures must include appropriate support and counselling services, which will evaluate the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies

The admission criteria will be the same for full-time and part-time students.

All relevant information on the admission process will be available on the official website of the programme and will be subject to annual review taking into account the reports issued by the System of Quality Assurance.

Students with Special Educational Needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
