Admissions criteria (PhD in Biolaw: Bioethics, Health, and Human Rights ) (Inter-university)

Access Requirements

  1. According to the regulations governing access to any official doctorate programme (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January), candidates must be in possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree to access a doctoral programme.
  2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    1. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme as per the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60 must be at master's degree level.
    2. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, of at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's degree programmes.
    3. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.
    4. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. Be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.
    6. Be in possession of an official university qualification that corresponds to level 3 of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications in Further Education, in accordance with the procedure established in Royal Decree 967/2014, of 21 November, which established the requirements and procedure for the homologation and declaration of equivalence to qualifications and to official academic university level and for the recognition of foreign studies of Further Education, and the procedure to determine the correspondence with the levels of the corresponds to level 3 of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications in Further Education of the official qualifications of Architect, Engineer, Graduate, Technical Architect, Technical Engineer and Diploma.

Access profile

Due to the multidisciplinary nature of this doctorate programme, the admission of researchers will be possible through the following qualifications: qualifications in legal sciences, qualifications associated to Health Sciences and Philosophy.

Admissions criteria

Once the doctorate schools at the participating universities have checked that the applications meet the access requirements, the Academic Committee will be responsible for deciding if the applicant fits the access profile and meets the admissions criteria.


The documentation will be submitted in accordance with the format approved by the commission.
 

With regard to the admissions criteria, the Academic Committee will analyse the following merits:

Academic merits: a) Master’s degree academic record. b) Bachelor’s degree academic record. c) End of master’s degree project (TFM), End of degree project (TFG), or similar work

Research merits: a) Papers and/or communications presented at congresses, seminars, conferences, ... b) Articles in research journals. c) Book chapters. d) Specialisation courses taken related to the discipline of Biolaw

Professional merits: a) Career path linked to the specialised area of the PhD. Programme.

Other merits: a) Written text by the student regarding the choice of the PhD. Programme and the research line(s).

The Academic Committee will consider the above-mentioned criteria with the following weightings:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and master’s degree academic record, up to 5 points of the total valuation. 
  2. TFM, TFG and other similar work (their mark will be assessed, as well as the topic’s relationship with Biolaw), up to 1.5 points of the total valuation. 
  3. A complete and exhaustive assessment of the academic curriculum vitae, up to 2.5 points of the total valuation. In this section other learning will be valued as well as merits in research (publications, course and specialisation days undertaken) already described. 
  4. An assessment of the especially relevant or significant merits in relation to the doctorate programme applied for relating to the professional path of the applicant, up to 1 point of the total valuation.

In the event that there several similar candidates in terms of the above criteria, then the preparation and motivation of the student to access the doctorate programme will be assessed.

Finally, if the Academic Committee has doubts regarding the value of a candidate’s profile, then a complementary interview may be called, which may be telematic. 

A minimum score of 4 points is required to be admitted onto the doctorate programme.
