Research Line: Cell Biology of Intracellular Reproduction and Transport.

Description of the line: Studies on cell biology, histology, and bioethical aspects related to animal and human reproduction. On the other hand, the intracellular traffic is researched, especially the morpho-functional organisation of the Golgi apparatus in normal and pathological conditions.

Research line: Functional Regulation of Receptors Coupled to G Proteins.

Description of the line: This research team studies the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation mediated by molecules derived from amino acids, such as peptide hormones, and polyamines. We analyse the role of the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), with emphasis on the effect of natural mutations on signalling properties, intracellular trafficking, and increased risk of skin cancer.

Research line: Polyamines Metabolism and Cellular Regulation.

Description of the line: Studies on the regulation of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), an enzyme that catalyses the limiting stage of the biosynthetic process of polyamines, as well as its regulatory proteins, antizymes (AZs) and antizyme inhibitors (AZINs). Both ODC and its regulatory proteins are related to processes of cell growth and differentiation, and are considered targets of antineoplastic agents.

Research Line: Chronobiology and Aging.

Description of the line: Animal models for the study of aging. Integrated assessment of patient’s rhythms using non-invasive techniques (integration of blood-pressure registers, motor activity, body temperature, exposure to light, pupillometry, expression of clock genes and sleep-wake) in order to collaborate in improved diagnosis and treatment of disorders with a major circadian component such as aging, hypertension, diabetes, and sleep disorders.

Research Line: Aquaculture

Description of the line: Feeding strategies for fishes. Design of diets for fishes: alternative ingredients. Rhythms of dietary behaviour and dietary selection in fishes by self-demand. Nutritive use of dietary lipids in fishes. Environmental cycles and fish reproduction. Ontogenetic development of the fish clock.

Research Line: Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

Description of the line: Culture of adipocytes to study the expression of different genes and to be able to delve into the molecular functioning of human adipose tissue. Studies of nutrigenetics in obese patients and relationship with the alteration of the circadian rhythms. Nutritional intervention in obesity.

Research line: Endothelial Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress in Cardiovascular and Renal Physiopathology.

Description of the line: This research line aims at establishing the importance of vascular endothelium and oxidative stress in cardiovascular and renal alterations of hypertension, renal damage secondary to ischemia, pre-eclampsia, type-1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. 

Research line: Alterations of Nephrogenesis and its Implication in Renal Disease. Sexual Differences.

Description of the line: The objective of this line is the study of the mechanisms responsible for alterations in renal function and hypertension in adulthood, which appear as a consequence of a decreased number of nephrons in the perinatal stage.

Research Team No. 7: Cell Therapy and Translational Medicine

Research Line: Cell Therapy and Haematopoietic Transplantation.

Description of the line: Stem cells, whether embryonic, induced pluripotent or adult, are a potentially unlimited source of cells for research or for clinical use in transplants. The ability of these cells to improve function or repair damaged tissues in disease animal models has contributed to generating high expectations in the development of new therapies for human diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's and ischemic or degenerative diseases.

Research Line: Hypertension and Liver Cirrhosis.

Description of the line: Both diseases, arterial hypertension, and liver cirrhosis, share numerous humoral, cardiovascular and renal alterations, among others, which are relevant for the study of their pathophysiology. We are also interested in studying the role of vascular endothelium, free radicals and the effect of nutraceuticals and other drugs on the development and complications of these diseases.

Description of the line: Study of the pharmacokinetics of antibiotics and antiparasitics in domestic species: pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic integration. Study of modifications induced by polymer formulations for parenteral administration. In case of lactating animals: study of residue from these drugs.

Research Line: Cardiovascular Pharmacology: In vitro Study of Automatism Cardiac Contractility.

Description of the line: Study of cardiac contractility "in vitro" and its regulation by activating drugs of G proteins and inhibitors of phosphodiesterase. Study of normal and pathological cardiac function, modified by stimulation of G protein coupled receptors and the role of phosphodiesterase. Research on sinus and contractile myocardium of animal and human models (heart failure and atrial fibrillation).

Research Line: Brain Aging and Dementias.

Description of the line: Development of anatomical and behavioural studies on normal and pathological brain aging in animal models. The anatomical studies are focused on the analysis of histochemical, immunocytochemical and connective markers in brain areas involved in cerebral aging processes, especially in the limbic system. At the same time, various behavioural tests (active avoidance, passive avoidance, labyrinth elevation in cross, Barnes labyrinth, cold immobilisation, cant-test) are applied to clarify different mechanisms inherent in memory, learning and emotional processes.
