The University of Murcia is a first level centenary higher education and research institution, which is a key axis in the dynamization of research, education, culture, art and economy of our Region. To acknowledge its endeavor is absolutely necessary, but, but not less necessary is it to demand from the university a continuous modernization, the optimization of resources and a growing interaction with its environment.

The Council, of which I have the honour of chairing, is assigned functions of all kinds, but one of them stands out from the rest: the promotion of connections between the university and society.

Occasionally, one may have the perception that the University is absorbed in its daily activities, and it is difficult for it to raise its head to consider what its environment needs. But it is also true that society does not always have the University in mind to solve its problems.

It is in this area where the Social Council of the University of Murcia will intensify its efforts. The University of Murcia is a public service that must focus on the society that surrounds it, and the Social Council will have as its primary objective to help build bridges of unity and understanding between society and the University, in which Murcian society could claim from the University what they expect from it and, in turn, the University could show what it is capable of offering.
