Specific skills:    The team involved belong to the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM), an Institute belonging to the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), is a multidisciplinary centre for the study of the seas and oceans and is involved in research in Mediterranean, Atlantic, Pacific, and Antarctic areas. The research objectives of the Institute, relevant to the EMPAFISH project, are ecology of demersal communities, ichthyoplankton studies and environmental impact of fisheries. The team has wide experience in marine ecology and fisheries research. One of the team members (Dr. Francesc Maynou) is co-ordinating a EU project on Bio-economic fisheries modelling (BEMMFISH, see below). Two of the team members (Drs. Paloma Martín and Ana Sabatés) are currently participating in the BIOMEX project (see below). Dr. Montse Demestre co-ordinates the EU project RESPONSE, on the response of benthic organisms to trawl disturbance. The team will contribute its expertise to the domains of biomass export, egg and larval export; analysis of fisheries data (catches and yields), impact of trawl fishing on protected areas, bio-economic modelling and analysis of socio-economic data for the case study selected.

 Role in the project: Co-ordinator of WP5; participating in WPs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6; supplying data from case studies #1, 2, 7, 8 and 9
