Renewal and reservation of books and other documents

Loan

By means of this service, the Library allows you to have access to its bibliographic collections for use outside its premises for a specific period of time.

The Library is open to anyone who needs to consult its collections, but the lending service is restricted to members of the Campus Mare Nostrum (UM, Polytechnic University of Cartagena [UPCT for its acronym in Spanish], Alumni Association.  [Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos in Spanish]). To make use of this service it is essential to present your smart card, which serves as a library card.

In some cases, external users will be able to access this service by requesting a card that accredits them as such. If they belong to institutions that have an agreement with the University of Murcia, such as the Theological Institute (Instituto Teológico), the Segura Centre for Soil Science and Applied Biology (CEBAS, for its Spanish acronym), the National University for Distance Education (UNED, for its Spanish acronym) and the Miguel Hernández University, they can apply for the Visitors and Agreements card. (carné de Visitante y Convenios). Those who have a researcher's card can also access this service.

Late returns.

Users are obliged to return the books on loan within the period specified at the time they were given the books. If this period elapses without the books being returned, in the case of short loans, the right to enjoy new loans will be suspended at the rate of 4 calendar days for each document and day of delay, and 2 days per document and day for the rest of the loans.

Loss of borrowed materials.

The loss of borrowed materials must be reported immediately to the Library, and the person responsible for the loan is obliged to acquire a new copy of the work and deliver it to the University Library. In the event that the work is out of print, a used copy of the work must be returned if, in the opinion of the Library staff, it is in good condition. If this is not possible, new copies of works indicated by the University Library must be handed in until the market value of the lost work is reached.

Renewal

The loan will normally be renewable (the number of renewals depends on the type of copy), with the following exceptions:

  • When the book is returned late: the penalty prevents renewal.
  • When the book has been reserved, the reservation takes precedence.
  • As some documents are frequently used, in some cases it is not possible to authorise renewal to allow other users to access them.

Renewal can be:

In-person:

By phone:

Online:

In the "My Library" section of the ALBA Catalogue you can see your current loans and how long they are valid for. In the list of your loans you will see a box (select button) to the right of the items that can be renewed. Once you have made your selection, click on the "RENEW" button. Check that the loan date has changed and the time has been extended with the renewal.

Reservation

When a book is on loan, it is possible to make a reserve from the ALBA Catalogue. The Library will notify us when it is returned. Also, due to the current circumstances, it is possible to reserve books that are not on loan.

In order to be able to reserve something, you must be authenticated in the ALBA Catalogue before making your search: :

  • If you are a UM or UPCT user, click on Access for UM Users or UPCT Users,, and enter your e-mail address and password.
  • If you are an external user, enter in the User box:

Look for the document in the Catalogue and click on the button of the copies you want to "RESERVE".

You can check the status of your reservation from "My Library" in the ALBA Catalogue.

When the book is available we will notify you in one of the following ways:

  • Through your e-mail address of the University of Murcia (your_name@um.es), or any other e-mail account that you have communicated to us. Check at the information and lending desks that we have your e-mail address in our database.
  • By telephone at the phone number we have in our database.

The number of reservations is the same as the number of loan copies.
