Admission criteria (Organisational Information and Communication Management)

Access requirements

Article 7 of Rector's Resolution 42/2012 of February 6, ordering the publication of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia, establishes the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

  • 1. According to the regulations governing access to any official doctorate programme (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January), candidates must be in possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree.
  • 2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    • a. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme as per the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60 must be at master's degree level.
    • b. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's degree programmes.
    • c. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.
    • d. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    • e. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Applicant profile

Students must have previously acquired the following academic training skills:

  1. To distinguish and know how to establish a classification of the different information channels in organisations.
  2. To understand the nature, role, and value of information in organisations.
  3. To acknowledge the need for introducing an Organisational Culture in order to ensure its correct development in a society where information is a productive value.
  4. To perceive and acknowledge the Information Society as a knowledge creation environment in organisations.
  5. To duly understand and interpret information storage processes in order to facilitate their subsequent retrieval and dissemination of information.
  6. To manage search techniques and information selection and understand their development according to users’ informational behaviour.
  7. To implement effective mechanisms and techniques for retrieval and dissemination of information.
  8. To recognise the importance of communication development in organisations with their environment.
  9. To be able to perceive opportunities relating to sharing information in communication networks.
  10. To have the skill to foster a learning culture in information techniques and skills in order to improve management activities in organisations.
  11. Problem-solving skills for information management issues in organisations.
  12. To be able to design and manage the implementation of Information systems in organisations efficiently.

Therefore, suitable profiles for admission:

  • The Official Master’s Degree in Information Management in Organisations by the University of Murcia, which must be accredited by ANECA (Spanish Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation) and be in force.
  • The UNESCO Chair Master’s Degree in Information Management in Organisations, official degree in the Republic of Cuba and in the University of Murcia, having been recognised by the PhD Committee of Social and Legal Sciences of the University of Murcia.
  • An Official Master’s Degree of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) relating directly to the area of Information and Communication Management from another University or Institution of Higher Education.
  • A PhD or postgraduate programme in an EHEA university or in an internationally known university at an academic level, relating to Communication and Information and having developed an intense professional and/or research activity in the area of Information and Communication Management. 

The languages used are Spanish and English (B2 level).

Admission criteria

The selection of students who meet the admission criteria will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme as follows:

Preference will be given to those applicant profiles whose academic training and professional activity are most closely linked to the aims of the doctoral programme, that is to say, applicants holding a qualification in Information and Documentation Sciences and Communication Sciences will have direct admission to the PhD programme until places are covered (considering their academic record). However, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, applicants from other qualifications who wish to develop their professional or research activity in the area of Information and Communication Management may apply for the doctorate. The Doctoral Programme Committee of the Faculty of Communication and Documentation will issue the appropriate admissions reports based on applicants’ merits. In the event that the number of applications exceed the number of places, priority will primarily be given to the following merits:

Merits:

  • Similarity with the previous qualification (up to 50 %)
  • Related professional activities (up to 30 %)
  • Related research activities (up to 15 %)
  • Other merits (up to 5 %)

In the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the Service for Personal Advice and Orientation at the University of Murcia will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.

The requirements and admission procedures for part-time students are the same as those described above. If part-time students request a change to full-time commitment, they must justify their reasons to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme to resolve the case.

Students with special educational needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
