Objectives

Two different conceptions of self-knowledge have been proposed in contemporary epistemology, one based on the notion of expression, the other on the notion of transparency.  According to the first, self-knowledge is a matter of the expression of one’s mental life.  According to the second, self-knowledge is a matter of the formation of self-beliefs in accordance with the principle of transparency formulated by Evans – namely, that the question whether one believes that p is transparent to the question whether p.

The project aims to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal, with a view to putting forward a conception of self-knowledge that captures both the first-person and epistemic components of the phenomenon.

In addition, the project will link with the project on “Belief, truth and transparency” to assess the role of transparency in the formation of beliefs about oneself.
