Juan José Gómez-Navarro obtained his Higher degree in Physics in 2005. He was awarded with a FPU fellowship that allowed him to obtain a PhD degree (cum laude, European mention) in 2012. During his PhD, Juan José was guest researcher at the University of Giessen (Germany), the University St. Francis Xavier (Canada) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Germany).

In 2012 he started a post-doctoral researcher position at the latter institution, where he initiated an international career, carrying out a number of long palaeoclimate simulations in the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ). Between October 2013 and March 2016, he was responsible of the group of regional climate modelling at the Climate and Environmental Physics Department of the University of Bern, where he was co-applicant in numerous projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. During this phase of his career, he started co-advising a PhD thesis.

After 4 years as postdoctoral researcher, in March 2016 he returned to the University of Murcia funded by the program for the reincorporation of experienced researchers. In January 2017 he became Principal Investigator in a project funded by the Saavedra Fajardo program. In 2018, Juan José was awarded with a grant from the Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación program, which is currently funding his research. He is the current co-advisor of the PhD thesis of Enrique Pravia-Sarabia. Since January 2018, he is the leader of the international project Paleolink, which is co-funded by the program of the generation of young leadership of the Séneca Foundation through a project obtained in competitive call and whose IP is Juan José.

Juan José has taken an active part of the organisation of scientific events. He has been co-convener in 4 session at the EGU General Assembly since 2016. In February 2019, the first Paleolink workshop, promoted and coordinated by Juan José Gómez-Navarro, is taking place in the University of Murcia.

In the educational aspect, Juan José Gómez-Navarro has been teacher assistant in the subjects "Energy and the Environment" and "Meteorology and Climatology" at the University of Murcia. He imparts class in the subjects "Introduction to Climate Modelling” and “Atmospheric Circulation” in the Master of Climate Sciences of the University of Bern. He has co-organised a series of seminars about the forum COP21 in Paris. Juan José has been awarded with the qualification as " Profesor Contratado Doctor" by the Spanish National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Qualification (ANECA).
