International Mention

In order to be awarded the International Mention in the PhD qualification, students must comply with the requirements established in Article 31 of the Doctoral Regulations of the University of Murcia, as follows:

  1. A research or training stay abroad. The student must complete a research or training stay of at least three months whilst enrolled in their doctoral studies and before depositing the thesis for its defence. The stay must take place at a higher education or research centre abroad (i.e., not in Spain) and will necessarily be backed by the thesis director and authorised by the Academic Commission of the Doctorate Programme before the stay’s start date. To that end, the student must fill in the form “Protocol for student’s mobility”, which must be signed by the student and by the thesis supervisor. Along with the form, the student must submit an acceptance letter from the host higher education institution or the research institution.

Once the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme authorises the stay (which will include its approval on the “Protocol for Mobility” form), the student will hand over the Protocol along with the acceptance letter from the host university to the International School of Doctoral Studies (EIDUM). It will be registered in the university system, in the student’s file.

At the end of the stay, the student must request a certificate of stay from the institution abroad (with the official letterhead of that institution, the signature of the scholar responsible for the stay, the start and finish dates of the stay, the activities carried out and their length). A copy of said certificate must be submitted to the EIDUM.

That certificate may be written in either Spanish or English.

  1. Thesis languages. At least the abstract and the conclusions of the thesis must be written in one of the common languages for scientific communication. It must be another language that is not one of the official languages in Spain. This rule will not apply when the stay abroad, the reports, or the experts come from foreign Spanish-speaking countries.

If a student decides and is authorised by the Academic Commission of their PhD programme to write and defend their doctoral thesis in a language other than Spanish or English; then they must comply with the requirements established in Article 18 of the Doctoral Regulations (please see “Relevant documents”).

  1. Experts’ reports. At least two experts from a non-Spanish institution of higher education or a research institute must issue a report about the thesis. In such reports, the adequacy of the thesis to lead to the title of Doctor must be mentioned.
  2. Members of the Board. At least one expert (Doctor) from a non-Spanish higher education or research centre must be a member of the Board. This member of the board will not be the supervisor of the training/research stage at the host university.
  3. Thesis defence. The defence of the thesis must take place at the student’s Spanish university, the one which the student is registered at. Students enrolled in Joint Doctorates will be allowed to defend their thesis in any of the partner universities.
