Major achievements during the project


o The case studies with data available were recognized and selected.

o Ecological, fisheries and socio-economic database framework were done.

oThe EMPAFISH webpage (www.um.es/empafish) was created, from which a number of documents produced within the project are available at different accessibility levels (from restricted to accessible to the general public).

o An interactive-table system was designed and implemented to complete online the different ecological data sets.

o Fishery ecological data set was completed.

o Ecological data set was completed.

o Meta-analyses of ecological data and fisheries have been carried out.

o A report showing global parameter issued from meta-analysis of ecological data has been produced.

o Results showing temporal and spatial analyses of the catch/landings, yields, all the other selected biological catch parameters, and the distribution and evolution of the fishing effort and evaluation of patterns and trends of the fishery regimes have been analyzed.

o Questionnaires about socio-economic activities have been fulfilled and the results have been analyzed.

o Methodological guidebook for socio-economic field survey has been produced.

o A document showing the conceptual model on relationships among components related with effects of MPAs has been produced.

o Set of documents with the best indicators in each defined dimension to assess effects of MPAs have been produced.

o Booklet defining suitable methodologies to collect and analyze indicators, and suitable experimental designs to test different situations on MPAs has been produced.

o A Public-domain software package for the bio-economic analysis of MPAs has been developed and it has been applied in one of the EMPAFISH case studies producing a document with the results of the bio-economic and cost-benefit analysis

o Recommendations on management strategies applicable in MPAs have been compiled in a document

o Interactive stakeholder website has been created within of the EMPAFISh webpage.

o A manual including guidelines for MPA management has been produced.

o 3 leaflets with the project relevant information have been produced.

o The European Symposium on Marine Protected Areas as a Tool for Fisheries Management and Ecosystem Conservation (www.mpasymposium2007.eu) was organized and held in Murcia (25th-28th September 2008).
