Training complements (PhD in Economics)

Recommended Applicant Profile

As indicated in the applicant profile section, students holding a master’s degree with a research itinerary in Economics or Business would be the recommended profile. In such cases, the student will not have to undertake any training complements.

Related Applicant Profiles

As indicated in the applicant profile section, we distinguish between two situations:

  1. Students holding a master’s degree without a research itinerary (professional itinerary) in Economics or Business.
  2. Students holding a master’s degree (with or without a research itinerary) in a related research area.

Students belonging to profile a) should take the following training complements in order to acquire the basic methodological and instrumental competencies to perform research in Economics. In general terms, such training complements will consist in taking the activities from the following subjects, which are considered to belong to the research speciality linked to the programmes in which they are taught:

  • Subject 1: Techniques of quantitative analysis (University of Murcia). Quantitative analysis and processing of tourist information (Technical University of Cartagena). Econometrics (National Distance Education University).
  • Subject 2: Research seminars (University of Murcia). Tourist research seminars (Technical University of Cartagena). Methodology of Economic Science (National Distance Education University).

In addition to the above training complements, the students will also have to take activities related to the research line chosen in their initial proposal of interests. For instance, those applicants who wish to do research on economic cycles in the University of Murcia (research line: Empirical Economic Cycles and Times-Series Econometrics) should enrol on the activities offered in the subject “Empirical Economic Cycles” of the master’s degree in Economics at the University of Murcia. On the other hand, those applicants who seek to do research on macroeconomics for open economies (research line: International Macroeconomics, Growth, and Public Policies) should enrol on the subject “Macroeconomics for open economies”.

For further information about the contents, learning outcomes, academic training activities or student assessment of those subjects, please read the teaching guides for each subject.
In any case, a profile a) will not be able to take more than 18 ECTS credits of training complements.
Regarding profile b), students will not take more than 24 ECTS credits of training complements. The subjects that the student will enrol on depend on the academic training of the student and the research line chosen. The Interuniversity Academic Committee will examine the academic background of the applicants, especially taking into account the research line chosen in their proposal of interest and the expert opinion of the professors involved in that line in order to decide what subjects the student should enrol on.

For instance, the applicants who have completed a predominantly mathematics training and who are interested in the research line “Mathematical Economics and Social Choice” could be asked to take the subject “Information Economy and Contract Theory”. That is because a mathematician masters the mathematical tools that will be used in this subject, but they do not know the economic theories and the use of mathematics for its development. However, this knowledge can be essential for the correct development of their thesis. Another example would be a student who has completed official postgraduate studies in Statistics who might be exempt from taking the subjects of quantitative analysis (type 1) if the Interuniversity Academic Committee thinks deems it to be appropriate.

In any case, all profile b) students who came from a non-research itinerary must take the activities offered in the research subjects of the corresponding master’s degree, which should be related to the research line chosen by the student in their initial proposal of interests.
Finally, both types of student profile (a and b) who wish to study in the University of Alicante or in the University of Miguel Hernández (which do not have a master’s degree linked to the doctoral programme) should carry out the training complements in any of the other universities participating in the programme which do have a master’s degree linked to the doctoral programme.
