Murcia

Murcia is a mid-sized city in south-eastern Spain, with a population of about 500,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Segura River, noted by a climate with hot summers, mild winters, and relatively low precipitation. Murcia is located near the center of a low-lying fertile plain known as the huerta (orchard or vineyard) of Murcia. The city, as the capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia, is sometimes called Europe's orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and its fruit, vegetable, and flower production and exports. A large natural park, the Parque Regional de Carrascoy y el Valle, lies just to the south of the city. Please check the Wikipedia page on Murcia for an overview.

How to come to Murcia

Some general guidelines are provided below. Still, please do not hesitate to ask the local organising committee for advise regarding how to come to Murcia or the workshop venue.

By plane

There are two airports nearby. Murcia-San Javier Airport (MJV) is located on the edge of the Mar Menor close to the town of San Javier, 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of Murcia. There is also an airport at the neighboring city of Alicante (ALC) 70 km (43 miles) from Murcia. The latter is generally the best option, as it is a rather large airport with many and frequent connections with other important European airports.

From the airport of Alicante there is a connection to Murcia by Bus probided by the company ALSA. You can check the timetable here.

By train

Train connections are provided by RENFE. Murcia has a railway station called Murcia del Carmen, located in the neighborhood of the same name. Several long-distance lines link the city with Madrid, as well as Valencia, and Cataluña up to Montpellier in France.

How to move within the city

Murcia is a relatively small city, so you can cross it by walk easily. Still, for short distances, for instance from the train station to the workshop venue, you can either take a bus or a taxi with a fare of about 10€.

The bus service is the city is provided by Transporte de Murcia (get the android App here). LatBus also operates the interurban services.

Tramways are managed by Tranvimur. There is a single line connecting the city center (Plaza Circular) with the University Campus and the Football Stadium.

Venue

The workshop is hosted in the conference room of the hotel Hesperia Murcia Centro. This is a three starts hotel located between the main street of Murcia (Gran Vía Escultor Salcillo) and the oldest part of the city, therefore very close to emblematic places such as the Murcia Cathedral, Santo Domingo square or trapería.

How to come to the hotel

To get to the hotel from the bust station (assuming you are coming by bus from the airport), the easiest way is to either take a taxi or just walk for about 12 minutes (Murcia is pretty flat).

Reservation

The local committee organised reduced price rooms for all participants of the workshop.

To make a reservation, send an email to the organising committee for details on how to proceed.
